Powisset Garden Club
We aim to support interest in gardening, landscape and floral design, beautify the community, and support the conservation of our natural resources
About
Our Club was founded in 1989. We have 30 members and are a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.
Mission
To encourage and support the interests of our members in gardening, landscape and floral design; to provide service to the community through the beautification of public grounds, and in support of the conservation of our natural resources.
Monthly Meetings
We hold our meetings October through June on the first Wednesday of the month at various locations. The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. with coffee and refreshments. Our business meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program runs from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Dues are $100.00 per year.
Civic
Projects
Our club is responsible for the plantings and maintenance of the Soldiers’ Memorial year round in downtown Dover. Just prior to Memorial Day, our members plant the Soldiers’ Memorial with colorful red, white and blue flowers to honor Dover’s fallen servicemen and women.
We support the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Festival of Trees. We purchase and donate a Christmas tree that we have designed and decorated. The tree is then raffled off and given as a prize to a Festival attendee.
In 2014, we began a project to educate the Dover 3rd grade at Chickering Elementary School on the gardening techniques and uses of plants during the 18th century in Massachusetts. Our goal is to augment the curriculum associated with the Caryl House tour, with a dedicated classroom lesson on the use of plants and herbs in early New England life.
